I’ve said before that I enjoy stories filled with action and suspense that don’t necessarily have anything to do with super-heroics. I’ve recently come by an indie comic that has both of these qualities but it doesn’t stop there. The comic is action packed literally from the very first panel to all the way to the last. Created & written by Terence Anthony, Protégé, takes place in the world of high-tech espionage, a spy thriller by all accounts. The reading level is a bit more mature than the average comic but that’s not with out its reasons. In fact this gritty realism gives it a sophisticated quality that works really well with the plot and themes of the story. I really enjoyed Protege. It’s fast paced and well written with a style that gives it a cinematic feel. There is an ensemble cast that drives the story forward in positive ways that make you want to find out more about each of them. I could easily see this story played out on the movie screen and that’s one of its major qualities. The cliffhanger at the end of the first issue is what sealed the deal for me as far as positive reviews go. I love not being able to see where a story goes. Being predictable is a real turn-off for me but Anthony delivers so much more than a basic story. I can tell that he spent time with the small details particularly the dialog. His writing gives the entire story credibility and realism that this type of story needs and he does it well. So much so that I had to read the second issue in order to see the resolution of the first issues’ ending. If that is the kind of story that you are interested in, then I would highly suggest that you give this book a shot.
