What I’m reading now: Divinity.

I figure that it’s about time to take a look at something that I’m reading right now. Of course, I wouldn’t pick anything randomly. It’s always something that inspires me. Right now that book is Divinity. I just finished the first volume collection and I really enjoyed what I read. What’s this comic about you ask? Well, I’m about to tell you. Set in the universe of Valiant Comics, writer Matt Kindt introduces a new character that was born from the height of cold war in the Soviet Union, where a secret mission sent a craft into deep space to rival the United States. It was launched and the ship and it’s crew remained among the stars then as time passed it became long forgotten…until now. The craft has crash-landed in the Australian Outback along with the pilot who hasn’t aged a day and has returned with powers far beyond that of normal men. He is a god. This story is more than that though. It’s an action-packed emotional drama where the main character, Abram, constantly revisits his past. It’s a past were he made a choice between two loves: the girl he loved and his country. He chose his country. This decision affects how he uses his divine powers in the here and now and how others perceive him. He knows what his powers mean and has even acquired followers, but he’s also acquired enemies. The combined forces of many Valiant heroes are sent after Abram. The story is a bit of a tragedy when you realize that with his powers, Abram, wishes only to give people their strongest desires except that he will never really be able to have what he desires most himself and that even with that motivation, there are those that wish to see him stopped. This gives incredible depth to the character especially knowing just how powerful he is. What happens to a character like this who has so much power yet has had so much loss? Where will he go next and how will he change a world that he is unfamiliar with when his own ideals are half a century old. It’s something that I look forward to in the future installments of Divinity to find out.
