Comic Book Review: The Rise

TheRise

If you’re like me, then you like to change up the genres of comic books that you read from time to time. I don’t always go for just super-heroics. Sometimes I just want straight out action/adventure. The indie comic that I was fortunate to find recently has that and a lot more. “The Rise” is written and created by Matt Wahlquist who has carved out a story that centers on the Apex Division, a covert task force. In the premiere issue, this group is on a mission to save a kidnapped U.S. Senator except this leads them to a larger story being set up. The opening pages introduce a mystery character, a boy who is left naked in the snow of the Rocky Mountains. He seemed to have escaped some kind of secret facility. I suppose he will play a larger part of the story in issues to come. I was particularly interested in this piece of the story because just before the boy was introduced another character made reference to Hephaestus who is the Greek god responsible for forging all of the weapons in Olympus. I don’t think that this was done by accident. As for the main story of the issue, the action-packed sequences with Agents Sam Frey and Neil Traynor as they fight to save the Senator from a Mexican drug lord brought a Hollywood blockbuster style with them. Even when their entire mission is threatened by another mystery character: Aaron Reyes. I can’t wait to see where this comic goes from here. It feels like the beginning of a thrill ride that I want to be a part of so count me in for future issues.
