Comic Book Review: Morning Star

MorningStar

Paradise Lost is a 17th century epic poem that tells the story of the fall of man and their expulsion from the “Garden of Eden.” In that story, Satan who is the leader of all the fallen angels in Hell tempts Adam and Eve. Most people might be aware of how it is said that Satan was once the brightest star in Heaven named Lucifer. That being said, What if Paradise Lost had a prequel? For all intents and purposes, I think that particular back-story is being told in the pages of the indie comic book I’ll be telling you about this week. It’s called Morningstar, written and illustrated by Gerimi Burleigh. I’ve read the first three issues and I think it’s fantastic. The premise is simple yet exciting: at the dawn of creation, the universe was a raw, untamed frontier and there are seven gun fighting archangels that defend Heaven from creatures called Daemons, however, the main subject of the story is the tragic fall of Lucifer. In this comic, Lucifer is the Marshall of Heaven. “Before he was the Devil, he was Morningstar” is the tagline which powerfully gives you a feel as to what the stakes are of this comic because you know how it’s going to end. I think with the issues that I’ve read so far, this comic itself has it’s own epic feel to it. There is an underlying story that screaming to be told that’s somehow connected to the Daemons. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the rest of this tale unfolds.
