Comic Book Review: Spiderman 2099

Being a comic book reader, I’ve always felt it particularly exciting to be on the ground floor of a new title especially when that title involves a variation of an already well-known comic. In 1992, one of the most inspiring events that could have happened to me was the release of Spider-man 2099. From the moment that I first heard about it, I was completely compelled to know everything about this new character. As far as I was concerned, there had never been anything like this. How could you re-invent Spider-man? (Keep in mind that was well before the Ultimate Marvel Comics line.) This wasn’t Peter Parker as the man behind the mask anymore. The new web-slinger was a scientist named Miguel O’Hara. It all took place in the future, the year 2099. O’Hara worked in the genetics department for the Alchemex Corporation. He explored ways to recreate the powers of the present day’s version of Spider-man. After an accident occurred, he took on qualities of a spider, but not in the same way that Peter Parker was affected. The adventures of Spider-man took on a Sci-fi flavor. This is one of the first few times that, as growing up, I discovered something new and fresh in the comics industry. It allowed me to think of comics differently. I realized that that there were different ways to write similar characters. This comic sparked something in my mind, planted a seed in my unconscious that would later affect me as I began to tell my own stories
