For the first review of the year, I decided to review a comic that I have seen at the comic book shows for some time. I recently picked up the first issue because the concept behind the entire story seemed completely enthralling to me and by the time I finished it I was hooked. The first line of the book reads: “The mystics say there are 36 people who, in times of need, emerge to save us all.” There is something so enigmatic about that first line; that it’s hard not to want to see what it means. The comic book is called “The Thirty Six,” created by Kristopher White. The reader is introduced to a magical world inhabited by these thirty-six people who have a destiny to save the world. In this first issue we meet Noam who is tasked with saving a girl named Lenore from an ancient creature called a Golem, which the likes of has not been seen since the 15th century. Although I like the energetic artwork by George Zapata and the vibrant colors by Micki Zurcher, it is the story that is rich in mythology that has pulled me into the comic. I really enjoy stories that are different and daring and that’s what this comic is for me. On the last page, the main characters were faced with questions and mystery that makes the reader want more. I don’t know where this tale will lead, however I am looking forward to finding out as I will be looking for the next issues to come.
