What I’m Reading right now: Bloodshot Reborn
I previously wrote a two-part review of Bloodshot, both as an influence when I was younger and how I liked it when it was later rebooted by Valiant Comics. Well…consider this part 3: Bloodshot Reborn. Bloodshot has taken to a new direction and I’m happily along for the ride. As of right now, this is one of my favorite titles. So what’s the what you say? To get the character’s entire story, you need to read a story called “The Valiant.” This story ends with (SPOILER ALERT) Bloodshot turning human once again by a young woman with fantastic powers named Kay. Bloodshot failed to save her life yet she left him a parting gift. Since then is no longer bound by the ‘nanites’ in his blood, but it also means that he is completely mortal. Bloodshot Reborn picks up months later as he tries to make a ‘normal’ life for himself with the name Ray Garrisson, he’s taken for his own. Although, with the memories of what he’s done in his past rising to the surface of his mind, that proves to be harder than he hoped. They flood his mind and test his sanity. He drinks and takes drugs to numb the pain. He begins to see Kay as if she was still alive and also a child-like cartoon version of his old self called Bloodsquirt. They question whether he had more purpose before. The story moves forward as a mass shooting takes place. There is only one photo of the killer and he looks similar to the old Bloodshot. Ray believes that he is the only one who has what it takes to find this new Bloodshot and stop them before it strikes again. “Kay” and “Bloodsquirt” join Ray on his journey. Jeff Lemire put together this story so far and I hope that he stays on for the long haul because I really love what he’s doing. Rarely do I get to open a comic that I can’t put down. Really, I’d love to take you through the ride step-by-step, but it’s better if you just get there yourself.
