Indie comics are known for several things.
- They are done by regular people who have a passion for comics but do not have backing from a major publisher.
- The storylines are not as tight as the mainstream comics are.
This week’s review is on a new indie comic from Jason Beckwith. I recently met Mr. Beckwith at the Long Beach Comic Expo in February. When I came upon his booth, the cover of this comic stood out to me. Mr. Beckwith explained that this particular comic of his was about time travel but with out what is traditionally thought as time travel. I was intrigued. So I purchased the first issue of the series and here are my thoughts on it.
The premise of the comic is an ex-military man, who is unhappy with his life contemplates ending it when a visitor sent by his future self arrives. The main character is challenged with stopping a massive event from occurring that only he can stop.
Several questions come to mind as, how does his future self get a message to him? Who is this visitor and how does he know to arrive when he does? Is this the time travel without the time travel? Without giving too much away, we find out in the following pages, what the main character decides to do and how those events shape him. The massive event is stopped, people are saved and the main character is left to figure out how his future self contacted him. At the end of the comic, we are still left with a lot of questions. This is good for a first comic as it leads you to wanting to purchase the next issue in order to find out what happens.
But be warned, the speed of the comic moves very fast, to the point that you need to reread several pages to understand what is taking place. The art is very good, it is very very detailed, showing the emotions of the characters very well, this helps when trying to figure out what the heck is going on at certain points in the comic. But over all I found this comic to be interesting and did leave me wanting to purchase the next issue to find out what happens. I look forward to reading the next issue to see how this time travel without the traditional time travel works and where it leads the main character.
