I know is has been awhile since my first Star Wars review but wanted to circle back to them. For this review, I will be reflecting on issue #7. This is an important issue to the series so far. ( Yes, I know there are 8 issues out but the 8th issue has not reached me yet, I am on subscription).
First, lets do a small recap of the series so far. Vader is after Luke since he destroyed his precious ship sending Bobba Fett after the young Luke. Now, Luke is out on his own mission, in which he hopes to figure out if he can be a Jedi or not now that his master has passed away. Fett catches up with Luke but is not successful in capturing him. Luke gets away with a notebook of sorts that he is hoping will help in his mission to become a Jedi.
Ok! Now that we are all caught up lets get into this issue! Now, this one stood way out from the rest of the issues and is by far my favorite. We get in this issue Kenobi’s perspective and what he has been going while in hiding. Oh, did I mention we get his view after he has passed away? Check out the issue to get clarity on this, do not want to spoil it for everyone :] He speaks on how hard it is to be hiding and not doing anything to help the people of Tatooine in a drought and against Jabba’s henchmen. But he also speaks on how hard it is to not train young Skywalker when he is so close by. He often reflects and speaks to his old master asking why and how he could not have trained him for a situation like this. At times is appears that Kenobi is losing faith and who could blame him? Forced into hiding, not being able to help others and to train the best thing that could possibly happen to the force? You get the full emotional impact from the writing and see the anguish on Kenobi’s face from the illustrations. Not sure about you all, but being in situation like Kenobi would drive me crazy! He seems to handle it well though and due to young Luke trying to take matters into his own hands to stop Jabba’s henchmen, Kenobi’s faith seem to get restored to an extent towards the end of the issue.
The writing in this comic really help the reader to understand what is was like to be in hiding and all that Kenobi went through to help keep Luke and others safe to some extent. He despair that he feels at not being able to do his job or duty and the realization that he might truly be the last of his kind is heartbreaking. The writing truly brings you into the thoughts of Kenobi and you realize that this Jedi master is more then meets the eye.
