Comic Book Review : Prophet Part 1

Prophet

When Image Comics first came on the scene, it brought with it an explosion of talent and new creative material. I was able to see it happen first hand. There were a lot of titles to choose from that had interesting stories. One such comic was written and created by one of the powerhouse talents of the time: Rob Liefeld. This comic was called Prophet. The character’s debut was in another title of his called Youngblood then appeared in his self-named title. The story was exciting. A scientist during World War 2 foresaw a darker threat than Hitler in the future so he used top of the line technology to create a warrior specifically built to stop this future “evil.” John Prophet volunteered himself.   When the Nazi’s caught wind of this secret project they went after it, but the scientist hid John in a cryogenic chamber where he slept until present day, which as it happened, was the time of the foreseen future evil. Prophet was created to save the world and fight evil in its many forms. I enjoyed this comic and the ways that it inspired me. In many stories, the hero simply protects their city.   This one has a purpose…a destiny to protect the entire world.   Prophet was also powered by his faith. He recited verses from the Bible in his head that applied to the situation he was in. It grounded him and gave him strength for the weight that has been placed on his shoulders. I always thought that was unique. It gave him a special element of character that stood out to me. Although I continued to enjoy the action-packed adventures that John Prophet embarked on, I really learned something simple from this, that when creating a character, there are ways to make him three-dimensional like this.

Make sure to come back next week for the second part to this review!
