With Marvel taking over the production of the Star Wars comic books, we are starting to get the subplot lines from the major characters. As well a new feel to the comics. The new Vader line though picks up right were the new Star Wars line does, which is nice as the comics go hand in hand. What is interesting though is where the comics start, right after the first Death Star was destroyed, why here? Why not start it where the next film is going to take place ? Why not before that or even later in the storyline? One thought is, here we get to see what Vader goes through after the destruction of the Death Star. In the films and even in the older comics we do not get to get this close into Vader’s head. For me, personally, I love being able to get into a characters head and understanding their motives, even a bad guy such as Vader.
With the first two issues of this comic, the story is getting set up and we are told right away that the death star was destroyed. And we see Vader going on not only missions for Palpatine but his own personal mission. This mission that he is on though, though long time fans would know does not end in the most happy of circumstances, is interesting to see how Vader is and will deal with his personal mission. But with this comes the integration of other classic characters that have shown up in the main Star Wars comic line, which means that all the sub- comic lines are all linked. So far though, I have not found it necessary to be reading all the comics together in order to understand what is going on. It seems that the sub-lines are there for fans to get to know some of the characters better. I hope this trend keeps going, again I appreciate getting to know a character better.
If you have not already gotten into this series of comics, I highly recommend it. I read both of the comics in pretty fast succession as I could not put them down. Although, with Marvel taking over Star Wars I was a little apprehensive on how they were going to handle this , well lets face it, an iconic comic book series. But so far, I have not been disappointed. The third issue of Darth Vader is due out March 25, 2015.
